In Italia, the bar is a place for a quick bite to eat, a friendly chat or a break from work or play, but most of all, is
the place for un caffè! Caffè espresso is thicker and denser than, say, a regular american style coffee and is often used as a base for other drinks (or foods if you count tiramisù!). Though there is a misconception that espresso is very strong, probably because of its consistency and full flavor, a one-shot serving has less caffeine than a regular cup of american style coffee. The following list will give you an idea of what to expect when you place your order.
Caffè espresso - shot of espresso
Caffè macchiato - shot of espresso plus a little bit of milk
Latte macchiato - hot milk plus espresso topped with foam
Caffè doppio - double shot of espresso
Caffè americano - american style coffee
Cappucino - espresso topped with foamed milk
Caffè corretto - shot of espresso 'corrected' with liquor, often grappa or sambuca
